In doing so, you would also avoid the effects of the Parkinsons law which states that work tends to expand to fill the time allotted for it.In other words, youre more likely to be productive on a g iven task the less time you have to get it done.Another benefit of time blocking is that it reduces the number of choices youd have to make in any given moment - boosting your willpower for peak productivity.If youre somewhat now convinced about the time boxing method, heres a simple way to apply this in your life today.How to use the time blocking methodHere are 3 simple and easy steps to apply the time blocking method.Step 1 Divide a piece of ruled paper into two columns. On the left column allocate every two lines to each hour or 5-minute block of the day (whichever you prefer).Step 2 Estimate the amount of time each task is going to take to complete, then write these tasks on the left column with their respective time blocks. Optional add commentary notes in the corresponding right column.Step 3 Add buffer times or extra room around each time block to allow for adjustments or unexpected activities.Thats it. Its that simple.There are a few concerns or success factors to discuss briefly.Ideally, to achieve effective time blocking, you should spend up to 10 minutes the previous evening completing your time blocks for the next day.Its also important that as much as possible in Step 2 above, you avoid the mental optimistic bias of underestimating how long the completion of a task would require.When were too optimistic about how long a given task is going to take, we fail to completely follow through on what we set out to do.This bias (also known as the planning fallacy) can be avoided by simply keeping a timed record of how long your daily activities take to complete.For example, when I first started to introduce sprint training into my weekly exercise routine, Id time each of my sessions for a month. On average, I estimated that a full sprint workout would last for 15 minutes. This estimation helped me to effectively time block in my daily schedule.On another note, as it should go without saying, the bigger your task load, the more difficult it would be to us e the time blocking method. Conversely, the smaller the task at hand, the easier it will be to fit into a small 5-minute time block slot.If you have bigger tasks to complete that may require a long time to complete, simply break these down into smaller subtasks and slot them into your time blocks.Finally, make sure to ensure that your time blocking plan will help you to manage and deal with interruptions effectively.The best way to do this is to use the right column of the piece of paper to revise your plan should there be changes or interruptions during the day.At the same time, designate or create buffer time blocks on your schedule for interruptions as noted in Step 3.Time blocking for reactive work in this way could also help you to avoid overwhelm, reduce stress and stay focused throughout the day.Block your time or lose it foreverWe all have the same 24 hours in any given day. In this 4th post in my How to Write a Resume series, I want to get you to focus on something I think is every bit as important resume design.Its not just what you say, its how you say itHave you ever been to the website of someone you consider an expert and found an ugly, outdated, template-based site that looks like the experts 12 year-old nephew designed it on a rainy weekend? Whenever that happens to me, I instantly think less of that persons expertise. The bad design screams out of date to me. If their web design is so outdated, what am I to make of their advice?First impressions count. We all know that. You wouldnt go to a job vorstellungsgesprch in a t-shirt and sweatpants, so dont send a resume that is badly laid out. It makes exactly the same impression.Design with the Strategy in MindBut theres another aspect to a well-designed resu me and that goes back to what I discussed in my last post strategy.If youve followed my steps. You have developed a strategy for your resume. You know your value proposition and you have decided on content that will help you communicate that value proposition. This is where design comes in now you must choose a resume design that reinforces your strategy.If youve decided that the most important thing employers need to know is that you have developed successful brands for leading Fortune 500 packaged goods companies, then perhaps you should create a bold headline that communicates exactly that fact. You might also choose to bold the names of the Fortune 500 companies whenever they appear throughout your resume.If a ausverkauf rep decides that his consistent ability to increase sales is his value proposition, then he should make sure that sales numbers jump off the page all the way through the resume. That can be done with selective bolding or colors and lots of white space. (White space is key to making sure that key information is visible).Content is Not King When it comes to resume writing, content is only one piece of the puzzle. The best content in the world wont work if people cant read it easily, or if information is bunched up on the page so that they dont even see the most important facts. Writing a great resume is a challenge. Balancing design and content, knowing exactly what to include and what to leave out, targeting every word to your selected audience all these are tricky. But when you get it right, the rewards come in the form of phone calls and interviews.
